#yesallwomen & #bringbackourgirls

There are a few things that are going on right now that break my heart. It’s why I don’t like to watch the news, especially before bed, but I do it anyway because it’s important to know what’s going on in the world. There are also things that are incredibly inspiring to me, and I am happy to say that several of those things involve social media. It is refreshing to see it used for a positive purpose.

#yesallwomen and #bringbackourgirls are two hashtags that are catching like wildfire. If you’ve been living under a rock, it’s possible you may not know about the abduction of nearly 300 Nigerian school girls by Boko Haram, a militant Islamist group that is said to be inspired by Al Qaeda. First lady, Michelle Obama has been at the forefront of the #bringbackourgirls campaign, and if you would like to read more about it, you can do so here.

#yesallwomen is in response to the shooting by Elliot Rodger that occurred on Friday, May 23rd, and saw 6 deaths and numerous injuries in Santa Barbara. The killer’s manifesto entailed countless instances of misogyny and hatred toward women. #yesallwomen has taken the Internet by storm, seeing tweets and contributions from men, women and celebrities.

While both of these occurrences are tragedies, at least they are opening up a dialogue. It is time to start standing up for those around us, women and men alike. These are human rights issues, and it’s time to accept that regardless of our differences, we are all human. These are our rights.
